Who can participate?
Any HBCU undergraduate student can apply. All majors and class years are welcome.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. No coding required. You can build a strong concept using AI tools, design thinking, and clear storytelling.
Can I join solo, or do I need a team?
You can apply solo and form a team later (or we can help you match with others). Teams need to be 3–5 students from your school.
What are the challenge tracks?
You can choose one:

What will we submit?
Finalists submit:

How long does it take?
You can complete the learning and build steps in short sessions. Most teams work a little each week and ramp up closer to submission.
Scholarship Award Amounts
Scholarship amounts are funded through a combination of national sponsors and institutional partner support.
Sponsor-Funded Awards — $100,000 Total
Students from PROPEL U partner schools compete for: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place
Higher scholarship amounts made possible through sponsor funding. Participating PROPEL U partner schools: Alabama A&M, Howard Univ., Morgan State, North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M Univ., Clark Atlanta Univ., Cheyney Univ., Alabama State, Hampton Univ., Huston Tilloston, Miles College, Morris Brown, Tenn. State Univ., Univ. of the District of Columbia.
National Awards — $25,000 Total
Students from all other participating HBCUs compete for: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place

Is it virtual or in person?
The challenge is primarily virtual. Selections and judging are also handled virtually.
What do winners receive?
Top teams are eligible for scholarships and prizes along with a trip to Austin Texas.
How do I access the course and challenge hub?
You’ll access everything through challenge.propelcenter.org. Once you enroll, your progress saves automatically.
